What is my Base Currency?

What does my base currency determine?

Your base currency determines the currency of translation for your statements and the currency used for determining margin requirements. (Securities that are held in other currencies will be marked to market to show the total account value in your base currency.) You will choose your base currency when you open an account. You may change it in Account Management.

Margin Accounts:

Customers who hold a margin account may change their base currency at any time through Account Management.

Cash Accounts:

Customers who hold cash accounts may have multi-currency (MULT) capability and may trade non-base currency products.1

Please Note: You are not restricted from making deposits and withdrawals in any one of the aforementioned non-base currencies.1

  1. Fees are charged in the currency of the traded product and liquidations may occur if fees result in negative (short) non-base currency balances.

US IRA margin accounts are never allowed to borrow currency and must pay in full with the native currency of the asset. This may be accomplished by converting currency before the trade.
